Pickup Villager Mod [1.20.4] will simplify the process of transporting villagers. You’ll only need to create a glass sphere and simply click on a villager with it to place them inside. When you want to retrieve the villager, just place the sphere on the ground: the villager will be freed, and the sphere will break.
